The incapability of a woman to conceive, after one year of regular sexual union without contraceptives, or to retain the fetus till childbirth is called infertility. It is a challenge, which not only affects the physical life of the woman but also disturbs the social and emotional life of the couple. According to some experts about half the childless marriages are due to abnormalities in the male partners, though women are traditionally blamed for sterility. Infertility is also assigned to factors relating to non production of sperm or to other reasons relating to quality.

Factors involved in Creating a Healthy Child According to Ayurveda; conception takes place due to healthy sperm, healthy ovum, and a healthy uterus. For both men and women, reproductive health depends on the health of the Shukra Dhatu, or reproductive tissue. In women the Shukra tissue creates the ovum as part of the monthly cycle, and in men the semen is formed due to sexual stimulation. The Shukra tissue itself is created as part of a long chain of metabolic transformations, starting with the digestion of food and including the transformation of food to Rasa (plasma), Rakta (blood), Mamsa (muscle), Medas (fat), Asthi (bone) Majja (nerves) and finally, to Shukra (reproductive tissue). Healthy Shukra tissue, then, according to Ayurveda, depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body.

Problems with infertility can arise when nutrition does not reach the reproductive tissue; this can happen due to under nutrition, poor digestion or obstruction due to toxins.
Having sex by compulsion with a person whom you do not like.
Eating spicy, salty and hot food increase Pitta and destroys Shukra (semen).
Overindulgence in sexual activities leads to Shukra Kshaya (decrease in quantity of semen). It may lead to Clibya (impotency).
By controlling sexual urges for longer duration leads to Veeryaavarodha (Obstruction of semen) and this leads to decreased libido.
Infertility can also arise when the reproductive tissue is damaged by infection or trauma.
Some acquire the impotency by birth.

Pre-natal Preperation

Ancient Indian medicine has recognized the need for the mental, spiritual and physical preparation of the mother-to-be for the momentous event of childbirth. Ayurveda describes this theory as "Supraja Janan" or Maternity. This "Supraja Janan", as conceptualized in Ayurveda, involves the preparation of the couple planning pregnancy, three months prior to conception. Pregnancy should be by choice, and not by chance. The beginning is by Pinda Shuddhi or the purification of the Gametes (sperm and ovum). If the couple is not in a state of mental stability and calmness, even if they are physically fit, they cannot give birth to a healthy child. This mental calmness and stability ("Sattva Guna") of mind is closely related to ones food habits and many other factors.

As fields are prepared for sowing seeds, so should a woman's body be prepared for the most important seed of her life. Sattva Veda takes 'family planning' a step further and recommends preparation for pregnancy; daily routine; diet and self-care during pregnancy.

Development of Parent-Fetus Bonding
The techniques involve meditation, autosuggestion, self-hypnosis, and visualization (including the highly-effective white light visualization and benevolence beaming technique), establishing a dialogue with the fetus. The main requirement to transmit 'good values' is to establish communication with the baby in the womb. Thoughts and feelings of the parents affect the baby. Even before the thought is expressed, it remains in an unexpressed form in the mind. At that time, its wavelength is the shortest and its energy is at the maximum level. Intentional, directed, selfless, unspoken thoughts lead to maximum Sanskar on the fetus.

'We pray in the name of the Highest Truth. We believe that everyone stands by his own causality, self or karma. To the extent to which the karma of all three of us has conjoined, my prayer should contribute to, and ameliorate the child. Though I do not wish any change in the chosen course of the child, I harbor a natural desire for the good of the child. Little baby we welcome you!'

Effect of Music
It is also proved that fetus also responds to the music. From the 7th month the fetus can hear the sounds from mothers womb and from the surroundings of mother and also responds to them. Sound of mother's heartbeats is the first and nearest sound heard by the fetus and hence when the mother takes her crying child close to her the child stops crying and becomes calm. It is possible to give energy for the development of body mind and soul of the child in the womb by listening to special music. The sound of the Veena (Indian string instrument which is held by the Goddess Saraswati), flute and Samaveda mantras gives health to the pregnant woman and the child within.

Some music CD's , such as, "Garbh Sanskar : Blessings For The New Arrival", "Garbha Sangeet" are available.

Lifestyle of the mother-to-be
It is unadvisable for the mother-to-be to watch films depicting scenes of horror, murder, and violence. It can produce negative effect on the child's character in future. During pregnancy she should keep company only with people who have a favorable influence over her. She should read fine literature, look at the beautiful works of art, listen to soft music, contemplate pleasant landscapes and have only positive and constructive thoughts.

Herbs
Two herbal Ghees are recommended in the 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th months of pregnancy. The herbal preparation 'Kalyanakam Ghrut' is used in the 4th & 5th months. It is supposed to be effective in the development of mental faculties of the growing fetus. It also helps in the development of all bodily systems in the fetal baby. More over it prevents congenital abnormalities. This ghee prevents anemia in the expecting mother. 'Thanka sree Ghrut' is used in the last months of pregnancy. This aids the complete developments in the fetal life and can bring good fortunes to the child. This ghee also helps aid and support a full term normal delivery.
